Pupils from St Mark’s , who competed in a local schools’ challenge against Stewards and Passmores, were thrilled to win the Faraday Challenge Day this month, scooping a prize for themselves and a trophy for the school. It was organised, and run, by the Institute of  Engineering and Technology as part of its commitment to show young people the benefits of careers within Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The Challenge Day gives pupils the opportunity to research, design and make prototype solutions to  genuinely tough engineering problems, in addition to enabling them to experience working as an engineer for a day. All the pupils involved worked enthusiastically throughout the day and were a credit to their individual schools.

St Mark’s Science teacher, and coordinator of the Challenge, Godfrey Osei said, “We were very pleased to win the competition. Our school is passionate about giving our pupils new and exciting opportunities to engage in STEM subjects. A strong UK economy relies on great engineering output, and it is crucial to get the engineers of the future interested at an early age.”

The St Mark’s team now progress to the National Final to compete for a cash prize of up to £1,000 for the school.
